Former Minister led team evaluates damages caused by rains

Mangalore, July 13 (UNI) Former Minister B Ramanath Rai headed team, appointed by Karnataka opposition party, completed its tour to assess damages caused by rains in the three coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada today.

Speaking to newspersons, he said the total loss due to rains was over Rs 45 crore. The team would submit its report to the KPCC-I President tomorrow in Bangalore, he added.

He demanded that the state government should immediately announce special relief package to the three coastal districts which had suffered extensive damages due to rains. The death toll, in rain related incidents, had gone up to 13 in the region.

The total estimated loss in Uttar Kannada was Rs 25 crore, Rs 10 crore in Udupi and Rs 17 crore in Dakshina Kannada.

A total of 51 houses had been damaged in Dakshina Kannada, while 34 houses were damaged in Udupi and 12 houses in Uttar Kannada. 752 houses were partially damaged in Dakshina Kannada, 700 houses in Udupi and 716 houses in Uttar Kannada, he said.

He said the state government had failed to take any measures to check the sea erosion in several parts along the coast.
