Chennai students bag top award in steel structure competition

Kolkata, July 13 (UNI) Students of Chennai based School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, today emerged winners of the 8th National Student Award Competition for Best Innovative Use of Steel in Architecture as their winning model for World-class Railway Station will come up at Kolayat/Chalobi in Rajasthan.

SAP's students V Ramanand and Sandhya Krishnan took pole positions as their design of steel structure among 35 groups of competitors at the national contest was adjudged best by the jury members, drawn from different architectural institutions in the country.

The winning team was given a cash of Rs 30,000 and a scroll of honour.

Announcing the results today of the competition held here yesterday, two teams were judged as first runners up. They were M Bhavani, Rekha Ravi Kumar and S Ramachandran, also from SAP and Subhojit Das and Souparni Pal of Jadavpur University.

The second runners-up teams were Suniti Viswakarma, Preeti Bhargawa, Sweta Sharma, Shashank Marya of Apeejay School of Architecture and Planning, Greater Noida and Harish Jain, Khuhagra Mittal and Sonal Dongra of IIT, Roorki. The first and second runners up were given Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 and scrolls of honours.

The competition was organised by the Institute for Steel Development and Grwoth (INSDAG) and supported by Tata Structura.

The theme for this year's competition was ''World Class Railway Station'' in the real life project as the winning model will see actual erection in Rajasthan, the jury members said.

In steel toilet block structure, competition, Jadavpur University's Diwali Mukherjee won the first prize bagging a scroll of honour and Rs 10,000, Venkatesh Prasad of Hyderabad's JNTU and Rosi Sarkar and Prabitra Sarkar of JU.
