Centre reviews progress of Assam Accord

New Delhi, July 13 (UNI) A tripartite meeting has reviewed the progress in the implementation of the Assam Accord and set a time frame for the completion of several ongoing projects.

The meeting, attended by Border Management (BM) Secretary U N Panjiar, Assam Chief Secretary P C Sharma and AASU President S P Roy, was held at Guwahati on Wednesday last.

Mr Panjiar assured that the government would continue to attach highest importance to the Assam Accord.

It was noted in the meeting that 193.68 kms out of 223.81 kms of sanctioned border fence along the Asom-Bangladesh border has already been completed.

The Chief Secretary apprised the meeting of the difficulties faced and assured that the remaining stretch of fence would be completed within the current year. The progress would be fortnightly reviewed at the level of the Chief Secretary.

The meeting noted with satisfaction the progress made in regard to the Assam Gas Cracker Project, Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road Project, improvement of credit deposit ratio in Asom, establishment of 21 additional foreigners tribunals for detection of illegal migrants and steps taken for expansion of the Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio.

Home Ministry sources said here today that the meeting also took note of the steps taken by the Asom government towards employment generation for youth and the funds earmarked for this purpose and steps taken for flood control measures.
