Army jawan dies, lady love 'critical' after suicide bid in Jammu

Jammu, July 13 (UNI) An army jawan died while his lady love is fighting death allegedly after they consumed poison at a bordering village here in Jammu and Kashmir, police today said.

The jawan, identified as Ram Pal, 25, of 157 Bn of Territorial Army (Home and Hearth), last evening consumed some poisonous substance, along with his beloved Neena Kumari at their native village Khadia Kurd in Bishnah area in the outskirts of Jammu.

Objection of their families to their marriage is said to be the reason being lovers taking extreme step, the police said.

Villagers spotted the couple lying in the fields in unconscious state last night. They took them to the nearby hospital, which immediately referred them to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.

''Ram Pal had perhaps take larger dose of poison and was pronounced brought dead. However, condition of Neena was still critical and is being monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU),'' sources in the GMC told UNI.

A case in this regard has been registered in the Bishnah police station.

Defence spokesman Lt Col S D Goswami said the army has also initiated an independent inquiry into the matter.
