New Delhi, July 13 (UNI) Irked over the 'personal attacks' against Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, the BJP today asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh if this diatribe was not tantamout to 'mudslinging'.

Mr Digvijay Singh is a former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and his statements yesterday dubbing the Vice-President a 'matriculate' did not befit the position he held, BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad said.

He also sought to defend the statements and booklets brought out by the BJP against UPA-Left presidential nominee Pratibha Patil stating that they were all in the public domain -- evidence extracted from the files of Courts, files of Reserve Bank of India and Maharashtra Cooperative Departments. ''I would like to ask Dr Singh what he thought about the statements of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister because he had dubbed BJP's campaign 'mudslinging'.

If there is no reply from Dr Singh, it would expose the hyprocritical mask,'' Mr Prasad said.

The former CM's statement was not of his own but only addressing the concerns of 'his master's voice', Mr Shekhawat's spokesperson Sushma Swaraj said. As far as the comments about Vice-President's educational status was concerned, she said the Vice-President had graduated himself in the 'University of Life' in his 55-year-long political career.

'Mr Singh should understand that yesterday's matriculates can beat today's post graduates hollow,'' she said, adding that Mr Shekhawat's political life was 'spotless white'.

About the claim of numbers in favour of Ms Patil by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Mr Prasad said, elections were not about arithmetics but ethics. ''The elections will be held on July 19. A week is a long time in politics,'' he added.
