Violence erupts in Patna after road accident

Patna, Jul 12 (UNI) Violence broke out in downtown area of the capital city here today after two children were run over and killed by a speeding mini bus.

Police said a large mob which gathered on the spot immediately after the accident set on fire the mini bus and severly assaulted its driver. A number of passing vehicles were also damaged in the process.

They also pelted stones on the police, forcing them first to lob tear gas shells and then resorting to fire in the air to scare the mob. However,it was not yet confirmed how many rounds were fired though none was injured in the firing.

The incident took place near Gulzarbagh railway station under Alamgunj police station area here at around 12-00 hours when the children were going to the local market. While one child died on the spot,the other succumbed to his injuries in the city hospital,the police added.

Later a strong contingent of police arrived on the spot and brought the situation under control though tention was still prevailing in the area.

Meanwhile, as a result of the mob violence and subsequent road blocks at different places demanding adequate compensation to the victims' families and arrest of the bus owner, movement of vehicular traffic in the area was severly affected causing inconveniences to the people.

The bus driver,has,however,since been arrested,the police said.
