New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report within two weeks from the Haryana Government about the killing of a newly-wed couple in Kaithal district.

The Commission has also directed the Haryana police to provide adequate protection to the family of the dead boy.

The boy's sister, Seema Devi, and representatives from the Democratic Youth Federation had met NHRC chairperson S Rajendra Babu and sought the Commission's intervention in the case.

An inquiry-team from the National Commission for Women has already been directed to visit the district for an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.

Manoj and Bubli, who had eloped from Karoda village on April 6 and got married in a court a few days later, were allegedly murdered on June 15.

The representation submitted by Seema Devi said the Haryana and Punjab High court had asked the state police to provide security to the couple when they got married.

''Despite that the police lodged a complaint that the girl was a minor, they started harassing my widowed mother, my younger sister and brother and me,'' said the representation.

Manoj and Bubli were compelled to go to Kaithal court where the district judge dismissed police allegations that the girl was kidnapped, it said.

''Police left the couple in Pipli township at the mercy of their relatives and villgers...The two were killed and their bodies thrown into a canal,'' the representation said.

The document said their bodies were declared as unclaimed by police and cremated without informing the families.

''Our family was ostracized by the villagers,'' it added.
