Nagaland MP appeals to lift blockade
Guwahati, July 12 (UNI) Member of Parliament from Nagaland W Wangyuh Konyak today sought intervention by All Asom Students Union to lift the blockade imposed against the neighbouring state by various student and minority bodies.
Appreciating the AASU's formal withdrawing of the blockade, Mr Konyak said, the people of Mon and Mukokchung districts are bearing the brunt as several organizations have continued with the economic blockade to the two districts via Sivasagar and Jorhat in Upper Asom.
''The AJYCP, Asom Gorkha Students Union and Asom Tea Tribe Students Union are still continuing with the economic blockade and preventing carrying of essential commodities to Mon and Mukokchung districts,'' he said in a letter to the AASU leadership.
The MP also alleged that even passengers are not being allowed to cross over to the Asom side from Nagaland. ''This will spoil the relationship between Assamese and Nagas,'' he observed.
Mr Konyak requested the AASU leadership to persuade the organizations to withdraw the agitation.
Protesting the onslaught on Asom villages by Naga miscreants, the organisations have continued with the economic blockade in Sivasagar and Jorhat even as the AASU had formally lifted the stir after appeals from various quarters.
Another blockades also continued against Arunachal Pradesh in the Sadiya subdivision of Tinsukia district after tribal men attacked a peace meeting, injuring around ten people in the Asom side.
The blockades have triggered shortage of essential commodities in both the states, prompting the administrations to issue repeated appeals to the organizations of Asom.
