Indirect taxes up by 12.5 per cent in May

New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) The revenue realisation from custom duty registered a hefty growth of 19.8 per cent from April to June, 2007, but excise duty growth was a meagre 6.8 per cent during the period.

Custom duty was of the order of Rs 23,571 crore upto June 2007 while excise duty collection was Rs 25,161 crore. The excise duty collection was sluggish despite the respectable growth in Industrial production.

For the month of June, the growth rate in custom duty was 15.9 per cent while that of excise duty was 7.6 per cent.

The figure with regard to former was Rs 8,183 crore while for excise it was Rs 9,313 crore.

The total duty collected on account of custom and excise averaged a growth rate of 12.7 per cent April to June with the figure in this regard being Rs 48,732 crore.

The combined figure for excise and custom for June was Rs 17,496 crore with a growth rate of 11.3 per cent.

Service Tax registered a robust growth of 41.2 per cent from April to June 2007 and the amount collected in this regard was of the order of Rs 5,878 crore.

The growth rate of service tax of June 2007 over June 2006 was 37.2 per cent and the collection on this account was of Rs 3,001 crore.

Indirect taxes (custom, excise and service tax) registered a growth rate of 12.5 per cent in May 2007 over May 2006, with the figure in this regard standing at Rs 20,342 crore.

In May, the revenue realised on account of indirect taxes was Rs 18,075 crore.
