Hurriyat Chairman Geelani put under house arrest
Srinagar, July 12 (UNI) Breakaway Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest tonight to prevent him from going to Martyrs graveyard tomorrow.
Official sources said the move was taken as a precautionary measure.
A spokesman for Hurriyat Conference Aiyaz Akbar told UNI that a large number of police personnel surrounded the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani at 2130 hrs.
He said Mr Geelani was informed that he has been put under house arrest and he cannot leave till further orders.
Mr Akbar said Mr Geelani was scheduled to visit Martyrs graveyard to pay tributes to 22 Kashmirs who were killed by Dogra police on July 13 in 1931.
The Breakaway Hurriyat Chairman was also scheduled to address Friday congregation in the near by Naqashband mosque.
The Hurriyat conference has already given a general strike call for tomorrow.
