Delhi Police clarifies on profiling of N-E students

New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) The Delhi Police today denied that it was into any ''profiling'' or any such identification measure of North-East students in the capital as reported in a section of the media.

Clarifying on the contents of the 'brochure' which the district police had issued for the convenience of students in Delhi, DCP (West) Robin Hibu told UNI that while briefing on certain 'dos' and 'don'ts', the 15-page booklet has several interesting guidelines for the general tourist in the capital.

''There is no such order on profiling anyone. It is a booklet with a host of information on Delhi which would would be handy for any tourist visiting the capital,'' he said.

Stressing that there was nothing specific about any community, the DCP said the information has been gathered from meetings held with students, leaders and officials in order to make it more useful.

''It has information on vehicle safety, house security, servant verification and the like besides other useful information that would make the user's stay here comfortable and easy,'' he added.

Actually its an emergency tool for the newcomer to Delhi, he claimed.

Mr Hibu was reacting to reports that the Delhi Police was doing a social profiling of North-East students in Delhi from the security point of view, which drew the ire of politicians in Tripura capital Agartala and who sought 'immediate withdrawal' of the order.

A report from Tripura capital Agartala said the ruling CPI (M) condemned the reported move for terming it ''derogatory'' while the Congress denounced it demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The booklet had purportedly sought to provide 'well-meaning' advice that should help the people ''blend into the Delhi society despite the handicap of their foreign' features.''.

The booklet reportedly said the women do not cover themselves up, and they mix with no one. In regard to their attire, the booklet advised ''Revealing dresses should be avoided and they should avoid lonely roads or bylanes when dressed scantily.'' Left Front spokesperson Goutam Das said ''it is unprecedented and against the constitutional rights of the northeastern people. Such action would only impose a sense of alienation of the people of the region as a whole and student in particular.
