2 killed in UP, flash floods in Asom, KR Sagar attracts visitors
New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) Two people were killed and one sustained severe burn injuries on being struck by lightning in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh while flash floods wreaked havoc in Dhemaji district of upper Asom, causing a massive breach in National Highway and rendering 40,000 people homeless since last Night.
Rains in Himachal Pradesh triggered landslides at certain places and continuous downpour turned the KR Sagar dam in Karnataka into a tourist attraction.
The national capital received rainfall late in the evening after a long dry spell and rising humidity.
In the north and north-west regions of the country, the monsoon remained subdued. Light to moderate rain was reported in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Shimla and Himachal Pradesh and isolated places in east Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The southwest monsoon has subdued over Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, west Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Kutch and Marathwada with Chandigarh and Allahabad recording the highest temperatures.
However, rains are likely at these places, according to the weather forecast.
In the east, heavy showers occurred at most places in Asom and Meghalaya besides a few places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Few places in Orissa and Jharkhand also received rains and thunderstorms.
There is also a possibility of heavy rains at many places in in Arunchal Pradesh, Asom, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and Bihar, which has been reeling under intense heat for the past two weeks.
Moving southwards, rain and thunderstorms occurred at few places in Maharashtra and at most places in Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where the Congress party today demanded relief to the rain affected villagers of Middle and North Andaman.
Further down south, rain occurred at most places in Kerala, where monsoon isstill active, while Lakshadweep experienced light showers during the past 24 hours.
Chennai also received heavy rains due to weakening of monsoon over the northern region of the country.
