Rain-related toll rises to 4 in Kheda, rains relent

Nadiad, July 11 (UNI) The toll in rain-affected Kheda district has risen to four with one death reported late last evening, even as this downpour shows signs of relenting.

A state transport bus from Balasinhor to Anand was trapped in a pit yesterday. While commuters were getting down, an 11-year-old girl, Ranjanben P Parmar, slipped from her mother's grip and was swept away. Her body was later recovered.

Over 100 persons trapped in Santej village in Kheda town yesterday, who had taken shelter in a temple and a school, heaved a sigh of relief today as the water level receeded. National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) personnel said today that all the people are safe.

In the last 24 hours, Balasinhor received 147 mm of rainfall, Katlal 143 mm, Kapadvanj 179 mm and Kheda 4675 mm.

Meanwhile in Anand district, the rainfall recorded was 369 mm taking the season's total to 3133 mm. Still 15 villages in Tarapur and Khambat are flooded but there has been no rains in the region since this morning.

In both Kheda and Anand districts, food packets and water pouches were supplied to the stranded people.
