Punjab Govt to construct Ambedkar Bhawans in districts

Chandigarh, July 11 (UNI) To perpetuate the memory of Dr B R Ambedkar, the Punjab Government is planning to construct Ambedkar Bhawans in the state.

Mr Gulzar Singh Ranike, Minister of Welfare for SCs/BCs, who presided over a meeting of district and tehsil welfare officers and officers of Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation, said that 12 such bhawans had already been constructed and five more were under construction in different districts.

He said, that authorities were looking for land in new districts of Tarn Taran, Barnala and Mohali for constructing the Ambedkar Bhawans.

He called upon the officers to ensure proper publicity of the welfare schemes of the Government and directed them to identify beneficiaries under ''Shagun'' scheme and make the payment of incentives to the beneficiary on time.

He emphasized on the need to tap central schemes to the maximum so as to ameliorate the lot of the scheduled castes and backward classes. Mr Ranike said that a sum of Rs 61.9 Crore had been disbursed under the "Shagun" scheme to the beneficiaries during the last year.
