LAEF militant killed, weapons recovered

Shillong, Jul 11 (UNI) Meghalaya police has gunned down a Liberation Achik Elite Force (LAEF) militant in an encounter and seized five live hand grenades and a revolver in West Khasi Hills district.

Randalin Sangma, a senior cadre of the nascent militant outfit, wanted in recent triple grenade explosions in Garo Hills, was killed last night at Chobeng village under Shallang Police Outpost, a senior police official said here today.

He said police received a tip-off regarding presence of LAEF militants and cordoned off the area.

The militants were asked to surrender but they opened fire and in the ensuing encounter, Sangma was killed, the police official said, adding that some of the militants made good their escape inside the dense forest taking advantage of the darkness.

Meanwhile, the police are carrying on the combing operations to nab the other militants.
