Kapil for more ODIs and ICL matches in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, July 11 (UNI) Without being drawn into any controversy, former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev said here today that more international cricket matches should be played in the city.
Speaking to newsmen after inaugurating the blood donation camp organised by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association here Kapil Dev said "I will like that more ODIs and Test matches should be played in Chandigarh. Even more matches of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) should be played at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium." When his attention was drawn that after a gap of 14 years, Chandigarh would be hosting an international one-day match between Australia and India on October 8, Kapil Dev, a product of Sector 16 Stadium, said " The Board of Control for Cricket in India should allot more ODIs, Tests and Ranji Trophy matches to the City. Even ICL matches should also be played at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium." "I do not want to send any message to the Board of Control for Cricket in India through the media," categorically said Kapil Dev when a reporter drew his attention that the BCCI had issued instructions that cricketers should not associate themselves with the Indian Cricket League mooted by the Essel World Group. The Board has threatened to stop pensions and other benefits to those cricketers/officials/scorers who associate themselves with the ICL.
"I want to give back to cricket which has given me so much. If any body will try to prevent me from discharging my duties, it will be unethical on their part. If BCCI calls me, I can go and meet them. If they do not want, I will not go to meet them,'' said Kapil Dev.
Regarding his vision for National Cricket Academy (NCA), Kapil Dev said "Cricket is not now confined to only cities .
Even in villages, it is played so good cricketing facilities should be available throughout the country. More academies should be established in the rural areas." Replying to a question whether foreign coaches should be associated in the NCA project, Kapil said "I am for any thing which leads to the betterment of cricket.'' UNI
