Fencing stopped in western border of Tripura

Agartala, July 11 (UNI) Facing stiff opposition from the villagers affected by the on-going fencing along the Tripura-Bangladesh border, the administration has stopped work on the western boundary of the state at Sonamura subdivision.

According to official sources here, following public outrage against the eviction by the people living along the border, the district administration ordered to stop the work while Border Security Force(BSF) exerting pressure to complete the fencing to contain cross border movements, infiltration and smuggling.

BSF have stepped up surveillance along the border in past fortnight and there were a number of clashes between people and security forces, the sources said.

In the meanwhile, the forest department issued notice to the illegal occupants in reserve forest area who were evacuated due to fencing and took shelter in the forest land.

BSF officials have also said that due to non-completion of the fencing work, the smuggling and other problems could not be contained and they emphasised on the early completion of the work.

According to BSF, following the information of stopping the fencing work, the smuggling activities have been increased and ban poultry products as well as medicines entered the state through Sonamura border though Tripura government imposed ban of importing poultry products from Bangladesh.

BSF 74 Battalion jawans have recovered 208 Bangladeshi sarees and about 1000 metre other cloths from a Maruti car at the border yesterday, BSF sources added.
