Economic blockade against Arunachal continues

Guwahati, July 11 (UNI) The economic blockade, launched by various organisations against Arunachal Pradesh, in protest against the attack on the Assamese people by tribals yesterday, entered the second day today.

Tinsukia DC K K Dwivedy said the situation was normal despite the blockade.

'' We are communicating with the administration of the Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh. They have urged the student bodies to lift the blockade, and assured that the guilty would be brought to book,'' Mr Dwivedy said.

At least ten people in the Shantipur area of Sadiya subdivision in Tinsukia district were injured when tribals from the Arunachal side fired at a peace meeting yesterday.

Reacting to the attack, Students organizations of Assam, including the AJYCP and ATTSA, announced an indefinite economic blockade against the neighbouring state.

Around 40-50 trucks ply to Arunachal Pradesh through Sadiya, supplying essential commodities.

Official sources said the blockade could hit some districts of Arunachal hard, and efforts were being made to persuade the student bodies to call off the stir.

No untoward incident has been reported.

Senior police officials have been camping in the subdivision to ensure that the situation remains under control.
