Bangalore, July 10 (UNI) Karnataka Minister for Medical Education V S Acharya today said the teaching staff transferred from Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) would be relocated by September 30.

Replying to a call attention motion moved by Mr A M Hindasgeri (Congress) in the Legislative Council, he said the transfer was a temporary measure taken to get Medical Council of India's (MCI) sanction for opening three medical colleges in the state.

He said the 23 staff transferred from KIMS would be relocated after the purpose was served.

Allaying fears expressed by the opposition members that KIMS may lose intake and the doctors may be black listed by the MCI, he said the government would make all efforts to increase the intake in KIMS to 150 from the present 100.

Earlier, speaking on the motion, Opposition Leader H K Patil strongly condemned the government's move stating that it was against the law of an autonomous institution.

The intake which was 150 to 170 in 1966-70 was reduced to 100 and in 2000 to 50 as there were inadequate staff. Only last year the intake was increased to 100, but if the MCI learnt about the reduction in staff strength it may again reduce the intake, he added.

Mr Patil demanded that the government should withdraw the transfers of the teaching staff immediately.

Mr Basavaraj Bommai (JD-U) alleged that the government's move was against the interests of the north Karnataka people and it would affect functioning of the KIMS.
