Jabalpur, July 10 (UNI) Bhartiya Jan Shakti (BJS) General Secretary Prahlad Patel has demanded a national debate over the implementation of controversial Setu Samundram Project.

The Setu Samundram Project would cause damage to ancient 'Ram Setu' or 'Adam's Bridge', believed to be built in the Treta-Yuga, Mr Patel said in a statement here.

The implementation of the project would hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and endanger the environment besides rendering about 10 lakh fishermen in South coastal region unemployed, he added.

''The movement of ships in this region would cause deaths of fishes and lead to damage to the environment'' Mr Patel said.

The BJP leader demanded the Centre to halt the implementation of the project until a national debate was carried out on positive and negative aspects of the project.
