Ranchi, JulY 10 (UNI) Accusing the UPA government at the Centre of following in the footsteps of erstwhile NDA government, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) today said adoption of Urban Land (Ceiling and Rgulation) Repeal Act, 1999, in Jharkhand would be opposed.

CPI(M)'s state secretary J S Majumdar said all the left parties had decided to oppose the government's move to adopt the Act.

Mr Majumdar said the decision was taken in a meeting held yesterday. He said adoption of the Act would adversely affect the tribals and benefit land mafias.

He said if adopted, the Act would also affect a large number of pending court cases related to land grabbers who had illegaly acquired tribal land.

At present only seven states, including Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, had adopted the Act, Mr Majumdar maintained.

The CPI(M) leader also criticised the government's move of implementing the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission in 63 cities, including three of Jharkhand.
