Thiruvananthapuram, July 10 (UNI) Kerala has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to advise Tamil Nadu to solve the Mullaperiyar Dam issue through dialogue as directed by the Supreme Court, Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran told the Assembly today.

However, Kerala Government had not received any reply from the Union Water Resources Ministry till date, he said in a written reply to Mr Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Cong) and others.

Mr Premachandran said during the Chief Minister-level talks between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the State had taken a strong stand on the necessity for a new dam at Mullaperiyar.

The Minister also said in case of any damage to the century-old dam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta Districts in the state would be submerged under water causing huge loss of human and animal life besides destroying assets.

Considering the anxiety of about 35 lakh people living in the downstream area, the government was taking necessary steps for finding a permanent solution to the issue.
