Chennai, July 10 (UNI) Leader of the opposition and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today alleged that there was an ''unannounced power cut'' in Tamil Nadu and urged Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy to take immediate steps to address the problems faced by the general public and Industries.

In a statement here, she said at a time when the state electricity board was celebrating its Golden jubilee, farmers, industrialists, domestic consumers, weavers, students and patients were facing problems because of frequent power cuts and low voltage.

Mr Veerasamy had claimed that there was only disruption of power in few places and there was no power cut in the state, but this was contrary to facts, Ms Jayalalithaa said.

She took exception to Mr Veerasamy blaming the previous AIADMK regime for shortage of power now. During the AIADMK regime, 10,098 MW of power was generated against the demand of 8,775 MW. But forgetting the fact, the minister had made an irresponsible remark, she said.

In the last one year, after the DMK came to power, the only achievement of the electricity board was prevalance of ''unannounced power cut'' and supply of poor quality of power in the state, she said.

Because of frequent power cuts and low voltage, Industrial units faced additional problems in maintaining generators, while farmers suffer due to damage of motors in pumpsets and powerloom weavers could not complete their production targets, she added.
