Kolkata, July 10 (UNI) Former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, who underwent an emergency surgery of the brain recently, was today discharged from a city hospital.

Talking to UNI here, Dr G K Prusty, who conducted the surgery on the former French premier, said Mr Rocard suffered from cerebral haematoma and his condition was improving.

Mr Rocard, 76, had a brain haemorrhage on June 30 while he was attending a meeting of the Asiatic Society in the city and was rushed to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute, where the surgeons, headed by Dr Prusty, removed blood clots from both sides of the brain.

''Mr Rocard had a similar minor trauma two months ago and was on medication,'' Dr Prusty said, adding that had he not been operated upon on time, there were chances of his having slipped into coma.

Mr Rocard, who stayed in CMRI for 10 days, looked relaxed and cheerful. He even said Dr Prusty was 'king of miracles' and that the doctors here were technologically advanced.

He was shifted to a hotel and would return home in the weekend.

Mr Rocard, who was the Prime Minister of France from 1988 to 1991, is presently a member of the European Parliament.

He was on a visit to the city to participate in a number of functions and meetings related to Indo-France cultural relations.
