Crime against women is on rise in Tripura
Agartala, July 10 (UNI) Tripura police called for mobilisation of social bodies to contain the crime against women and incidences of road accidents in the state.
Expressing concern over the issues, Director General of Tripura Police (DGP) K T D Singh informed here today that about 540 cases of crime in different nature against women were registered with police in past six months, while more than 400 major road accidents were reported in the state.
According to him, more than 50 per cent of the total women related cases were against married women associated with dowry and the husbands carried out the crimes while 40 per cent of the rape incidents were due to refusal of affairs by the victims.
Apart from strengthening the state Women Commission and strict police vigilance, Mr Singh urged the civil societies and NGOs to come up to eradicate the evils.
Speaking on road accidents, DGP said, more than 100 people died in road accidents while more than 700 were injured in the state during the past six years and he held rash driving and overloading responsible for the incidents.
''In first six months of 2006 the number of road accidents was 15 per cent and this year it reduced to 10 per cent though the state witnessed some 13 per cent growth in vehicles,'' Mr Singh added.
