Accused girl turns approver in marks scam case

Nagpur, July 10 (UNI) A girl student, an accused in a case pertaining to the revaluation scam of Nagpur University, has turned approver and will testify in the trial court against the persons who allegedly helped her to commit the fraud.

The application from Usha Marotkar for pardon and turning approver was approved yesterday by Special Judge A S Gattani who is hearing a bunch of cases pertaining to the revaluation scam and fake mark lists and degrees scandal that rocked the university several years ago.

Judge Gattani has declared Usha an approver and set July 16 as the date of her testimony. This is for the first time since the scandal broke out in 1999 that a beneficiary student has offered to spill the beans of the case.

In her application, Usha told the special court that she got her mark list for BA final examination tampered to show an increase in the score from 530 to 812 out of 1300 to ensure admission to the first year of the LLB course, in 1999. She was helped in this by a bookseller, identified only as Phophate, and two lawyers, identified as Dnyaneshwar Fule and Milind Ganar, Usha said in her application.

The forgery was detected during the scrutiny of her mark sheet, after which the university authorities lodged a police complaint against her.
