5,519 confirmed cases of AIDS in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, July 10 (UNI) As many as 5,519 confirmed cases of AIDS have been reported in the state, Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathy informed the Assembly today.

According to a survey conducted in 2005 revealed that about one lakh people were HIV positive, she said in a written reply to Mr P P Abdullakutty and others.

Ms Sreemathy said though the state had no special training centre for providing training to the doctors in HIV treatment, such training programmes were being organised by various centres under the Health Department.

Stating that there were 4,000 doctors in the government service, who got special training in HIV treatment, she said the government was taking effective measures to check the dreaded disease.
