Sardar Sarovar dam overflows, 3 talukas in Vadodara on alert
Vadodara, July 9 (UNI) Authorities of three talukas in Vadodara -- Sinor, Dabhoi and Karjan, were put on alert as the 1210 metre-long Sardar Sarovar Dam over the Narmada river overflowed by 2.25 metre today.
The water level in the dam located at Kevadiya colony, about 100 km from here, is likely to reach the 125-metre mark in the next 24 hours as against its crest level of 121.92 metre following heavy rains in its catchment areas and release of water from a couple of dams in Madhya Pradesh, official sources here said.
Presently, the inflow of water into the dam was recorded at 2.50 lakh cusecs and the outflow was 1.95 lakh cusecs. This was the highest overflow level recorded during the current monsoon, sources added.
Meanwhile, people living in the low-lying areas of the Mahi river coast in Savli, Vadodara and Padra talukas were alerted following the release of about 1 lakh cusecs of water from the Kadana and Panam dams into the Mahi river.
District Collector Rajiv Topno said all the Mamlatdars had been put on alert as the MET office had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district during the next 48 hours.
Normal life in Vadodara and its neighbouring areas was partially affected today due to rains since morning.
