Kottayam, July 9 (UNI) Opposition leader Oommen Chandy today announced that his ancestral property at Puthuppally was donated to the Puthuppally Panchayat.

Refuting LDF charges that he had encroached land at Puthuppally, Mr Chandy said at a news conference that the land was purchased some 106 years back and was in the name of his father K O Chandy.

The land was donated for road development by his grandfather and father, and it remained just three cent. Since it was a family property, he and his brother jointly donated the land, he said.

All political leaders, including those in the LDF, were aware of all these facts and the allegation that he had encroached the land, hurt him a lot, he said.

Political leaders should not only do good things but should be a model to others in every sense, he contended.

When asked why the allegation was not raised to counter his party's agitation against the CPI (M)-Lottery Mafia nexus, he said, ''I was not willing to politicise the issue.'' Referring to Munnar eviction drive he said, there was a good start and the UDF had supported it, but later things changed in the name of 'Ravindran Pattayams' and the stance that political party's land need not be evicted.

In the case of Tata's land, the UDF was always supporting the eviction but the government's recent action in the name of retrieving land from Tata was to help Tata indirectly, he charged.
