Punjab Gov, CM express grief over demise of Chandrashekhar
Chandigarh July 8 (UNI) The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen. (Retd) S F Rodrigues and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise of Chandrashekhar, member of Parliament and former Prime Minister of India.
Describing Chandrashekhar as a seasoned politician, a true patriot, outstanding parliamentarian and an able administrator, General Rodrigues said that he led the Nation successfully and his contribution in different facets of national life was laudable.
''The country has lost a true nationalist and good human being,'' General Rodrigues said conveying his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.
Mr Badal recalled his long personal and political association with Chandarshekhar and the relentless support lent by the great leader to various struggles of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
''Today, Punjab and Shiromani Akali Dal have lost a great and ever dependable friend and the country a champion of freedom, human rights and democratic values. He fought countless principled battles alongside the great Jai Parkash Narayan to safeguard democratic values, Mr Badal said in a statement issued here.
Mr Badal said that the beleaguered farmers of the country had been deprived of the tallest fighter of their cause, who would remain ''perhaps the most forceful symbol of clean and dignified conduct in public life.'' The great leader would long be remembered for the outstanding role he played in the country's struggle against the infamous Emergency. He was also one of the top three or four parliamentarians this country had ever produced, Mr Badal said.
Mr Badal would be attending the funeral of the departed leader in New Delhi tomorrow.
