PM, Vice Prez condole Chandrashekhar's demise

New Delhi, July 8: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today condoled the demise of former prime minister Chandrashekhar here this morning.

Mr Singh had visited Apollo hospital last night where the former prime minister was being treated for Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell.

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in a statement said that Chandrashekhar was a unique politician who bore the pain of poverty in rural India. He worked all his life to protect the democratic principles and solve the basic problems of our country.

He was a real hero of this age and nation builder. ''A great void has been caused by his death in our social and political lives, which cannot be filled.'' Besides, Water Resources Minister Prof Saifuddin Soz described Chandrashekhar as a champion of the poor. He was a true secularist and worked for the promotion of harmony amongst various communities. ''His death is a great loss to the nation,'' Prof Soz said in a statement.

Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna also condoled the demise of Chandrashekhar.

In his message, the Lt Governor described him as a national leader who had a sharp understanding of ground realities of Indian politics. He said, Chandrashekharji was commited to highest principles of patriotism and safegaurding of national interests.
