Srinagar, July 8 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar who, passed away his last in New Delhi this morning.

On hearing the news about the demise of the firebrand socialist leader and India's 11th Prime Minister, Mr Azad, who was in Jammu and scheduled to return to Srinagar in the afternoon, changed his programme and flew to the national capital where he visited the bereaved family and paid his condolences.

The Chief Minister described Chandra Shekhar as a true socialist who did not compromise with principles.

He said the late leader was a man of the masses who earned the name of a ''Young Truk'' for his conviction and courage.

His contribution to Indian politics could not be underestimated, he said, adding the former Prime Minister made a mark in public life by associating himself with the issues concerning.

Mr Azad said Chandra Shekhar was his neighbour in New Delhi and he held him in great esteem.

In his death, he said, the country had lost an able politician and a courageous leader who would be missed by his friends, colleagues and masses alike.
