Indians celebrate Taj inclusion in 7 wonders' list
Agra, July 8: Indians celebrated with enthusiasm and pride the selection of the monument of love, Taj Mahal, among the 'New Seven Wonders' of the world.
The results of the 'New 7 Wonders' were declared late last night in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, by Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu along with Hollywood actors Ben Kingsley and Hillary Swank.
People had been voting in favour of Taj eversince the process of selecting the new 7 wonders was started in 2000. Voting for the world famous monument of the 17th century had become a national issue.
To evoke passion of the Indian masses and get Taj included in the 'New 7 Wonders', a high-profile campaign was carried out by Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachchan, newly wed couple Abhishek and Aishwarya, former miss world Priyanka Chopra and Rani Mukherjee.
Taj was built by Shahjahan, fifth Mughal emperor, in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Built with snow-white marble, the Taj Mahal is regarded as the ''perfect jewel'' of Muslim art in India.
The emperor was consequently jailed and could only have a glimpse of the monument out of his small cell window.
Every year, around crores of people from India and abroad visit Taj and fall in love with the exquisite craftsmanship of the monument.
According to a tourist, ''the results of New Seven Wonders hardly matters as the monument would always be close to my heart. Nothing can overshadow its image of being the greatest symbol of eternal love, passion and beauty.'' The monument has not only brought laurels to Agra but to the entire nation.
