Amarnath yatra halted following landslides at Udhampur

Jammu, July 8 (UNI) The seventh convoy of 2666 pilgrims halted at Samroli near Udhampur following a heavy land slide on the 300 kms long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The highway was closed to traffic after landslides triggered by heavy rains blocked it at Samroli, 80 km from here, official sources said.

''Thousands of vehicles including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims were stranded. The convoy of 83 vehicles in which carrying 1880 males, 517 females, 113 Children and 156 sadhus, may be return Jammu,'' sources added.

The landslides caused by rains in Samroli area in Udhampur-Kud sector forced closure of the highway around 0800 hrs, official source said.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were working to clear the highway of landslides to ensure smooth passage of vehicles, official sources said.
