Woman swept away in Nagpur, 200 shifted in Amravati
Nagpur, July 7 (UNI) A middle-aged woman was swept away today by swirling waters in a nullah here in the city after overnight rains.
Meanwhile, nearly 200 people, living on the banks of a nullah, were shifted to a safer place after heavy overnight rains in neighbouring Amravati district.
According to fire brigade sources, Suman Dinanath Nikhare (52) was swept away when she tried to cross the nullah in Pardi area of Nagpur city this morning. She has not yet been traced, sources said.
Two hundred people, living on the banks of a nullah, were shifted to a safer place in Amravati district. The affected persons were accommodated in a school in Dharni town of the district, reports reaching here said.
Communication has become difficult because of the breakdown in telecommunication services in the area. Several houses in the town were also damaged in the downpour.
Nearly 30 villages in the district were cut off because of the heavy rains, sources said.
Heavy rains have been lashing Nagpur city since last night, throwing normal life out of gear. The city recorded a rainfall of 28.8 mm during the 24 hours ending 0830 hrs today, and another 27.6 mm during the next six hours till 1430 hrs, according to the local meteorological office.
Elsewhere in Vidarbha, Akola recorded 3.3 mm of rainfall, Amravati 28, Bramhapuri (district Chandrapur) 18.2, Chandrapur 2.2, Gondia 1.2, Washim 0.2, Wardha 14.6 and Yavatmal 8.2, the met office said.
