Tripura court awarded seven years imprisonment for dowry death

Agartala, July 7 (UNI) West Tripura Additional District Court has sentenced one Umananda Biswas of Kamalnagar village under Khowai sub-division to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry two year ago.

The court gave the sentence yesterday.

According to police, Umananda and his father Krishnadhan Biswas had set Arati Biswas(Sarkar) on fire on July 8, 2005, for not being able to give him the additional money which he demanded from the victim family.

Arati and Umananda were married in early 2005 and bride's family paid Rs 11,000 in cash and a good amount of valuables during their marriage as dowry. However, Umananda and his father had been exerting pressure on Arati for more money and finally set her on fire.
