Monsoon rain eludes most parts in region

Chandigarh, Jul 7 (UNI) Monsoon rain eluded most parts of north-west India, leading to hot weather conditions in the region today.

Except Rohru, Palampur and Pandoh in Himachal Pradesh and Hissar in Haryana, which respectively recorded 22.7 mm, 7.5 mm, 1.0 mm and 0.7 mm downpour overnight, the region had no rains since last night, according to the Weather Office here.

However, monsoon clouds hovered at many places in the region during the day and the maximum temperature stayed one to three degrees celsius above normal at many places in Punjab and Haryana.

The Met Office said that moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers will occur at many places in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain or thundershowers at few places in Punjab during the next 24 hours. Heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh.

In Punjab, the temperature hovered one degree above normal at Patiala recording 38.3 degrees celsius while Amritsar registered 36.6 degrees declsius. Ludhiana reported the maximum at 36.4 degrees which was one degree below normal.

In Haryana, the temperature also increased at Ambala recording 37.8 degrees, two degrees above normal. In Himachal Pradesh, the mercury hovered three degrees above normal in state capital Shimla recording 24.9 degrees.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana reported trace rainfall. The city recorded the maximum temperature at 35.4 degrees celsius.
