Mumbai, July 7 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today said Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station and Pune railway station would be developed to meet world-class standards.

Speaking at a function before inaugurating two additional railway tracks between Borivali and Virar at the Borivali station here today, Mr Prasad said the names of these two stations were already included in the list of stations to be developed into world-class stations.

Apart from this, he did not announce any major initiative for the city's railway network as expected by the people of Mumbai.

Responding to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmkh's demand that the Railway should generously fund for second part of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), as it had earned a record profit of Rs 20,000 crore, Mr Prasad said the Railway was ready for equally funding the project.

He said he would look into the demand, raised by the local MP Govinda Ahuja to run some women special trains between Borivali and Virar.

He said the railway would wean away the surface freight traffic after the dedicated corridor between Mumbai and Delhi comes into being.

Earlier, Mr Prasad also flagged off a special suburban service between Borivali and Virar, which is a part of the 20-special service between the Churchgate and Virar stations.

The function was attended by State Chief Minister Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha MP Hema Malini, local MP Govinda Ahuja, Mumbai Mayor Shubha Rawal and senior officials from the Western and Central Railways.

The two additional railway tracks, made open to the public today, were completed this June. The 25.8 km long tracks have been laid under the MUTP at a cost of Rs 504.82 crore, with 50 per cent funding from the Centre.

The work was completed in two phases. In the first phase, quadrupling of the tracks between Vasai Road and Virar was completed in May 2004.

The new tracks with AC traction would facilitate direct movement of AC power, and the operational efficiency was also likely to be improved since trains could run on the additional corridors.
