Sikkim MLAs have least vote value in Presidential election

Jaipur, July 6 (UNI) A sitting MLA from Sikkim carries the least vote value of 7 in the July 19 Presidential election as compared to highest value of 208 of a legislator from Uttar Pradesh.

An Election Office Spokesman said the value of the vote of a sitting MLA is determined on the basis of 1971 population and total strength of the state assembly of his or her respective state.

Accordingly, vote of each MLA from Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh would carry a value of 8 while vote of a MLA from Meghalaya value 9.

Value of vote of each MLA from Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu is 176, Bihar 173, Maharastra 175, West Bengal 151, Andhra Pradesh 148, Karnataka 131, Kerala 152, Delhi 58 and Jammu and Kashmir 72.

The combined vote value of all sittng MLAs from 30 states of the country comes to 5,49,474.

The sitting MLAs from Rajasthan will contribute 25,800 votes in the total vote value of 10,98,882 in the Presidential election.

According to Election Office data each of the 200 sitting legislators from the state carry vote value of 129 on the basis of 1971 census which put the population of the state at 2,57,65,806.

In addition, Rajasthan has 25 sitting Lok Sabha Members and 10 Rajya Sabha Members as eligible voters and they contribute a total vote value of 24,780.

If the party affiliation is any indicator then the ruling BJP commands comfortable majority in the presidential election in the state. The ruling party is presently having 122 members in the 200 member state assembly. Mr Surendra Singh, one of the 122 BJP legislators, presently stands expelled from the party. In addition to its own strength the ruling party is also banking upon support of 3 INLD members, 2 JD(U), one Samajik Nyaya Manch MLA and some Independents.

Contrary to this the Copngress, principal opposition party in the state, is having a strength of 55 members (one Jagat Singh expelled from the party) in the legislature and is banking upon support of other UPA allies like LJP (one), CPI(M) (one), BSP (2) and some of the 11 Independents.

The ruling BJP is also having upper hand in Parliament from this state. Of the 25 Lok Sabha seats from Rajasthan, the BJP presently holds 21 while six of the total 10 Rajya Sabha MPs from the state are from the BJP.
