Rajnath against religion-based reservation

Bhopal, July 6: BJP President Rajnath Singh today strongly opposed the Centre's proposal for religion-based reservation and suggested that economic criterion should be the basis for granting such benefit. Mr Singh said the Centre's move would pave way for another partition in the country.

Addressing the state-level BJP conference here, Mr Singh asserted that BJP will never let the Centre to introduce religion-based reservation.

''Reservation based on economic criterion is apt and minority communities should take initiative to introduce it'', said the BJP President.

He also charged that the United Progressive Alliance government had succumbed to the pressue tactics of foreign powers regarding internal security, nuke deal and other sensitive issues.

The erstwhile National Democratic Alliance government had ignored external pressure to conduct nuclear tests, Mr Singh added.

Expressing concern over skyrocketing prices, Mr Singh held the Centre's policies responsible for inflation. ''Shielding hoarders and black marketers has resulted in uncontrolled inflation and the common man has been forced to bear its burden,'' said Mr Singh. He demanded to raise support price of wheat from Rs 750 to Rs 1,250 per quintal, as the Centre was importing wheat at the same price despite availability of sufficient stock of foodgrains in the country.

Referring to increased terrorist incidents in the country, he said ministers are giving separate statements but such contradictions are not good for the integrity of the country.
