Krishna and bhima overflowing, respite in cauvery basin
Bangalore, July 6 (UNI) The flood situation in Karnataka painted a contrasting picture today with the Krishna and Bhima in northern part of the state in spate, and the Cauvery basin districts of Kodagu and Mysore having respite from monsoon fury.
A UNI report from Gulbarga said the vehicular traffic on the busy Gulbarga-Raichur State Highway came to a stand still as the Huvinahedgi bridge, near Devadurga in Raichur district was submerged by the surging Krishna flood waters. Raichur Deputy Commissioner Ravi Shankar told UNI that water was flowing one foot above the bridge. As a precautionary measure, vehicular traffic was diverted to other routes.
The inflow at Alamatti dam is 2.46 lakh cusecs and the discharge 2.31 lakh cusecs. The water level at the dam is 515.2 m. At arayanpur project, the inflow is 2.50 lakh cusecs and thedischarge is 2.47 lakh cusecs. The water level stood at 490.14 m.
In the river Bhima, 38,000 cusecs of water flowing and the water level stood at 3.5 m.
The devastating rains had affected standing crops worth Rs.75.07 crore in 16840 hectares in Belgaum district. Nearly 1098 public properties were also damaged costing the state exchequer of Rs 31.16 crore.
A report from Mysore said that life is limping back to normalcy in Cauvery basin region battered heavily by monsoonic rains over the last one week. Though the intensity of rain had reduced the inflow into the reservoirs in the basin continued to swell in view of the heavy inflow. The level at KR Sagar stood at 108.35 ft as against the full level of 124.8. The inflow however has come down to 32790 cusecs. the discharge was drastically reduced to 3824 cusecs.
However the level at Kabini Reservoir was just two feet short of maximum level of 2284.24 ft. The authorities has decided to maintain the level with the discharge being 25827 cusecs as aginst an inflow of 30122 cusecs.
The Harangi reservoir in Kodagu was recorded 2853 feet against the maximum level of 2859 feet. The inflow was 1717 cusecs.
