Kidwai for utilisation of inland fisheries scope
Chandigarh, July 6 (UNI) Haryana Governor A R Kidwai has urged fish experts and those engaged in pisciculture to utilise the vast fish potential available in the country so as to improve the economic condition of the fishermen.
Dr Kidwai stated this while inaugurating a two-day workshop on 'Fisheries and Aquaculture policy: Alternative Livelihoods and sustainability Perspectives' for Northern States organised by the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) here today.
He said there was tremendous scope of inland fisheries in the country with utilisation of wetlands along canals.
India is the largest exporter of marine fish in the world.
Dr Kidwai said Indian farmers and fishermen were very enterprising and if they were given proper training, knowledge, finance and quality seeds they could make their profession very profitable.
Mr Dalip Kumar, Director, CIFE, Mumbai said a series of workshops were being organised for formulating a comprehensive fishery policy in the country which would be in conformity with the policies of the state governments.
Steps had been taken to collect information from the neighbouring countries and fish producing countries like China and Thailand for making fish vocation profitable, he added.
