BMC to approach SC over killing of stray dogs: Phatak
Mumbai, Jul 6 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Jairaj Phatak today said they would approach the Supreme Court, seeking permission to kill stray dogs.
He told reporters the increasing number of stray dogs was causing a big problem in the city.
BMC had stopped killing stray dogs since 1994 after the HC put a ban on this practice. Instead, it began sterilizing them.
However, their numbers have spiralled manifold and the BMC is considering shifting them outside the city. But it would be difficult to shift all the stray dogs outside Mumbai, insisted the civic chief.
''If Mumbai needs to be transformed into Singapore or Shanghai, methods adopted there should be adopted here and strays should be killed,'' Mr Phatak said.
