20 dead in Bengal rains in last 3 days, 700,000 affected

New Delhi, July 6 (UNI) Altogether 20 people died in rain-related incidents in Bengal and over 700,000 affected as the situation in the state remained grim with incessant rains over the past three days flooding several areas.

The Army and Indian Air Force went on reconnaissance mission, evacuating the marooned at Ghatal, Arambagh and Sankrail in West and East Midnapore districts of the state as about 6,500 homeless flood victims had taken shelter in relief camps in different districts.

Heavy rain in the catchment areas inundated vast tracts of East and West Midnapore, Bankura and Bardhaman districts while the situation in Kolkata improved even though several areas in the western part and on the northern fringe still remained submerged.

In Andhra Pradesh's Nizamabad district four people, including three women, were killed and two others injured today in a mudslide.

At least three were killed in rain related incidents in Pali district of Rajasthan even with rains receding in Marwar region.

Two people were electrocuted in Pali town and another person died in a wall collapse in Rajolakala village. The district Collector said the flood situation has improved with no rains overnight.

Railways and Roadways sources said buses are not plying on Jodhpur-Jalore and Jodhpur-Merta road today. No trains are running on Jodhpur-Jaipur-Bikaner-Merta and Jodhpur-Marwar Junctions tracks.15 dams and almost all ponds and lakes are overflowing in Marwar region.

Air Force helicopters and district administration transported 55 people to safety in Jodhpur and Barmer district today even as the flood situation worsened in these two districts. Masuda region in Ajmer received heavy rains and most lakes are overflowing.

Chittorgarh and Bhilwara also received heavy rains.

In Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district two people, including a father and son, died when lightning struck them even as light to moderate rainfall occurred in several parts of the state.

The state was experiencing rainfall at present because of an upper air cyclonic circulation built over Rajasthan. Isolated places in Rewa, Jabalpur, Sagar, Hoshangabad, Bhopal, Ujjain and Gwalior divisions received overnight rainfall. Heavy rains are likely in Rewa, Sagar and Jabalpur divisions in the next 48 hours.

Hot and sultry conditions prevailed in the national capital as the maximum temperature soared further to 37.2 degrees celsius and the minimum to 28.5 degrees Celsius. The heat and high humidity level of 89 per cent left Delhiites sweltering.

The Met office has forecast a partly cloudy sky in the city during the next 24 hours with one or two spells of rain and thundershowers.

A cloudburst at Jakholi and Agustmuni Development Block in Rudraprayag of Uttarakhand late last night caused heavy damage as agricultural land, many drinking water and irrigation projects were damaged, said Jakholi Sub District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar.

A flood-like situation has arisen and a 50 metre-long motor road at Panjana had also suffered damage cutting access to Kumri, Chaka, Phalati and Dudola areas.

Hot and humid conditions continued to prevail in the plains of Punjab and Haryana, where rains and thundershowers were expected in next 24 hours.

In Punjab, the mercury slid slightly as Amritsar recorded a maxium of 35.0 degrees, Ludhiana 34.5 degrees and Patiala 37.0 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, the maximum temperature in Ambala was recorded at 35.7 Celsius, Hissar 38 degrees and Karnal 35.2 degrees Celsius and Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 35.2 degrees Celsius.

Light rain and thundershowers were reported in mid and lower hills in Himachal Pradesh while the state capital witnessed a clear sky without any rainfall.

In Jharkhand's Jamshedpur several people in the low-lying areas along side the Tue rivers were rendered homeless as water gushed into the slum areas.
