Srinagar, July 5 (UNI) The Army today claimed to have saved two women from drowning in river Kishenganga, which demarcates the Line of Control (LoC), in some parts of north Kashmir.

In a statement here, a defence spokesman said two women of Wampora village slipped into river Kishenganga while collecting firewood near its banks on June 27.

An Army post located about 400 m away from the river banks heard the women crying for help, he added.

The spokesman said the post commander along with three men rushed to the site to save the drowning women.

With total disregard to his personal safety, the commander immediately jumped into the fast flowing river to save the women.

The fast current of the river swept him off his feet he said, adding the officer showed an immaculate presence of mind and asked his men to form a human chain so as to re-enter the gushing water.

This time he was successful in saving one of the women, identified as Hajra Begum (38), the spokesman said, adding she was immediately rushed to a civil hospital.

However, the statement did not mention about the fate of the other woman.
