Pondy: Panchayat Prez to observe fast on July 12

Puducherry, July 5: Coordination of Village Panchayat Presidents here will observe a token fast at the Rajiv Gandhi memorial at Sriperambudur in Tamil Nadu on July 12 to protest the failure of the Congress Government to devolve powers to elected local body representatives.

Talking to newspersons here, Coordination Deputy Convenor Jaganathan said that even after one year of the local body polls, the administration had failed to take any steps to devolve powers to the representatives, which was an act of disrespect to the Panchayati Raj Act as well as the Constitution.

Various party leaders from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would address the agitators, he said.
