Meghalaya's Power Policy in final stage: Sangma

Shillong, July 05: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma today said the much-awaited Power Policy of the state was in the stage of finalisation.

Dr Sangma, who holds the Power portfolio, claimed that the revamping of the entire set up would take place once the policy is approved for implementation.

The Deputy Chief Minister also felt that the coal reserves in Garo Hills are under-assessed, adding that the coal found in this region is of high calorific value for setting up of coal-based thermal power plants.

Underlining that Power sector as the most contributing sector in the areas of development, he said the government is moving for maximum fund allocation in order to meet the local demand and also generate surplus to sell it outside the state.

Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had announced that an MoU would soon be signed between the state government and North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) for setting up power projects in the state.

The projects that would be developed includes 720 MW Nangalbibra and 230 MW West Khasi Hills thermal power project, 90 MW Mawphu and 1000 Kynshi hydropower.

In addition to that, Dr Sangma also announced that the foundation stones would soon be laid for Ganol hydro power project and Agia- Nangalbibra, double circuit 32 KV line.
