Import of Tomato banned in Mokokchung
Kohima, July 05: The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and Administration of Mokokchung Municipal Council has imposed a complete ban on import of Tomato from outside to Mokokchung district with immediate effect to facilitate the local tomato growers to sell its bumper harvest of the fruit.
According to official sources, the ban was imposed as the tomato growers of Longchen Project at Longkhum village under the district harvesting bumper Tomato under the State Horticulture Department had funded project and supply Tomato saplings to the farmers.
Over eight lakh saplings of four varieties were supplied by the Department to the project, out of which over seven lakh saplings yielded bumper harvest this year.
The Longchen project had already started supplying Tomato to the other districts of the state and some parts of Asom.
Meanwhile, a group of visiting journalist, who visited the project at Longkhum village recently, saw that several tonnes of Tomato were rotten in the field itself due to lack of transportation out of the village to the inside and outside of state.
They said that some other vegetables like potatoes, cabbages and chillies were also being cultivated in the project with good harvest, but the transport is impeding the sale of the vegetables.
