Girl drowns in Kashmir, boy's body recovered after 10 days

Srinagar, July 5 (UNI) A ten-year-old girl slipped to death in a waterfall while on a picnic at Aharbal in south Kashmir yesterday, officials said today.

Iqra, a resident of Parigam in Tral area of Pulwama district, along with her family had gone on a picnic to Aharbal yesterday.

Iqra was playing near the waterfall when she slipped and drowned due to the fast current of the water, the officials added.

They said her cousin, Zahoor Ahmed Peer, jumped into the waterfall to save her, but failed in his attempt.

Later, Iqra's body was recovered and her cousin rescued.

This was the second such incident at Aharbal within ten days.

Earlier on June 24, a ten-year-old boy lost his life while saving his sister from drowning in Aharbal waterfall.

Dr Shahid Qayoom, a resident of posh Jawahar Nagar area in the city, along with his family members had gone on a picnic to the tourist resort of Aharbal, about 86 km from here.

Ten-year-old Sehl Shahid was busy playing with his little sister near the waterfall when she slipped into the gushing waters.

Shahid jumped into the water and managed to save his sister but in the process drowned himself.

Shahid's body was recovered yesterday after ten days of massive efforts by relatives, police and marine commandos.
