EU welcomes India's decision to reduce duties on liquor
New Delhi, July 5 (UNI) The European Union today welcomed India's decision to reduce duties on imported spirits, saying this was a step in the right direction.
The EU has been pressing the Indian government to bring down duties on alcohol which will enable larger imports into the country.
Additional duties have been scrapped to meet WTO commitments and total duty incidence is down from about 550 per cent at the highest level to 150 per cent flat (for wines) or from 230 per cent to 100 per cent (for spirits).
"It is a step in the right direction and we weclome it. However, it is too early for us to say what will be the imapct of the duty reduction. The EU in Brussels is studying the matter", a Spokesman for the EU said here.
